A Tribute to Women Tech Entrepreneurs on International Women’s Day 2012

International Women’s Day marks a salute to the spirit of womanhood. This is an important day in the calendar since it’s a celebration of the powers of so called “weaker sex”. A reminder for the world that today, “She” has left no territory unconquered and has surpassed every domain par success.

Women have marked a notable presence in all industries. However, when it comes to the geeky world of technology, very few can relate women to this domain.  Men in the technology arena have always stolen the show and grabbed the paparazzi attention. Yet, there are many successful women entrepreneurs in the tech world who have touched the horizon of success.

This International Women’s Day, we thought of giving a round of applause to these successful tech businesswomen/proud daughters/mothers/wives by putting them in good news and bringing them in limelight.

Margaret Cushing “Meg” Whitman

Meg Whitman was appointed as the President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.  A Princeton University and Harvard Business School graduate, Whitman is a veteran in the technology-sphere. She has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry and these include eBay, The Walt Disney Company and DreamWorks to name a few.

Whitman also announced her candidacy for Government of California recently. She is a proud wife and a mother of two.

Marissa Mayer

Marissa Mayer is one of the youngest successful businesswomen since she entered the list of 50 most powerful women in the world by Fortune magazine in the beginning years of her career itself. This lady works as the VP, Location and Local Services with Google.

A Stanford University alumnus, this beauty with brains diva has apparently become one of the prominent public faces of Google.

Mary T. McDowell

Mary McDowell is another veteran from the world of technology. After working for almost 17 years with the renowned corporations like Compaq Computer Corporation and Hewlett-Packard, the lady today holds the position of EVP for Nokia’s Mobile Phones unit, as well as Mobile Financial Services business. She is also a member of the Nokia Group Executive Board since 2004.

Mary is a computer science graduate from the University of Illinois.

Virginia M “Ginni” Rometty

Ginni Rometty is the first ever woman president and CEO of IBM. She has taken over this notable position recently in January 2012, prior to which she had already been working with the corporation for nearly 3 decades. Her penultimate position was that of Senior VP, Sales and Marketing.

A Northwestern University alumnus, at the age of 54, Ginni Rometty is one of the most successful and ambitious women that the industry is proud to own.

Ursula M. Burns

Ursula Burns is the first woman of African-American origin to head a Fortune 500 company. The lady serves as the CEO and Madam Chairman of Xerox Corporation. Ursula is a New York University and Columbia university graduate and joined Xerox as a summer intern. It is from there that she scaled heights of success. Burns is a family-oriented woman, a doting wife and mother of two.

The above mentioned women are only handful in numbers. There are many other females who are working in the technology domain and each one has a different yet important contribution.

This International Women’s Day, let’s not limit our cheers to these successful businesswomen, but give equal tributes to all the mothers, daughters, wives and sisters who make this world a special place to live with their mere aura.
