Deleting an E-mail Account

Is your account inactive? Are there too many spam messages in it? Or maybe do you wish to consolidate multiple accounts? Owing to these reasons and many more are you thinking of deleting your e-mail account? If yes, then you are on the right page. The process of deleting an e-mail account might be different for different service providers, but here are some basic guidelines for deleting the accounts of some common service providers. These guidelines might help you in your approach.

Process of deleting your Gmail account

If you wish to delete your Gmail account, first log into the account by using your Gmail username and password. Select the “Edit” option from “My Services” and then click on the “Delete Gmail service” option under “Delete a Service”. Check the box to confirm the deletion.

With the delete of your Gmail account, you will lose an access to all the other applications where you have used the Gmail user name and password.

Process of deleting your Yahoo! mail account

Process of deleting your Yahoo! mail is almost the same. It’s just that you need to follow the instructions properly. These instructions will take you through the step by step process of deletion.

This is for your reference that if you wish to give up your Yahoo! e-mail account, you’ll lose access to your My Yahoo! settings, Hotjobs, GeoCities, and other Yahoo! services. If you still wish to proceed, go to the “Terminating Your Yahoo! Account” page and confirm your decision with your password.

In case of any paid services associated with your Yahoo! e-mail account, you have to terminate them separately. By doing so, you will not be billed any further.

Process of deleting your Hotmail account

If yours is a hotmail account, click “Help” on any MSN Hotmail page to delete the account. At the space provided for search option, enter “Close Account.” Select the “Close your account” link that appears on the screen. Do not forget to read the terms for deleting an account. This will assist in following the correct procedure of deleting. Depending on the status of your service level (free or paid), you may need contact the customer service representative to cancel your account. Once you have thoroughly read and accepted the terms, confirm your action by clicking on the ‘Close’ option.

Process of deleting your AOL e-mail account

The process is rather complicated when it comes to deleting your AOL e-mail account, especially when it is a paid one. Firstly, you have to download and take a print out of a PDF cancellation form from your account page. Then, after filling it up, fax or snail-mail it to AOL. The AOL customer service cancellation line at 1 (888) 265-8003 might also help. You have to pursue the service provider several times to make sure that the billing has been canceled.

Some important notifications

Depending on your provider and it nature (free or paid), it will range from 30 to 90 days for all e-mail account to be deleted completely.

Most free e-mail account providers discourage deleting your account. Instead, they recommend keeping an account idle, so that spammers could be restricted from taking over your e-mail account address.

Make sure that you follow the service provider’s instructions for maintaining a back up or exporting email account information. This is because it becomes impossible to revive any required information once the account is deleted.

Be aware that when you delete an e-mail account, you will lose all information, including address books and archived mail, associated with it.

Lastly, an account once deleted is deleted forever along with all its service features and related information.
