Easy Tips on How to Spring Clean Your PC

Spring Clean Your PC

The spring season has arrived and it is time when we spring clean in and around the house. Following some easy steps have helped me a great deal in spring cleaning my PC – inside and around it. You can wipe out unnecessary cluster of files and optimize PC for better performance and faster speed. Thus to start off –

Dispose of unnecessary startup clutters

My laptop used to hang frequently and also freeze several times a week. Hence, I decided to start spring cleaning my PC by wiping out unnecessary files that weigh it down. I focused on the taskbar and the system tray to find icons of programs that I sparsely need and that usually delayed the start up of my PC. Files that I can access and start as and when I needed I removed, such as Skype, Torrent, Gtalk, Yahoo! Messenger – it all takes quick right clicks on each.

Typify and cluster files in folders

If my desktop would have black wallpaper, then it would resemble a starlit night sky with icons scattered all over the screen. And it is so daunting when I look at it to search for a specific one. Hence my next target to spring clean PC project was to remove the clutter off desktop files. So, first I right clicked on the screen to do a ‘Arrange Icons By’ for files. Then, I created a few folders and pushed files into those new folders according to the type they fit into like ‘wallpapers’, ‘office doc’, ‘recipes’ ‘family fun time’, ‘exercise videos’, etc. I clubbed some files into the existing folders under the ‘Library’ main folders. Thus I arranged and organized my files.

Uninstall unused programs

There are some programs I was no longer using for close to more than six months. Now, trashing the icons from the desktop will just remove the top of the icebergs. Hence trashing those programs was my next step in spring cleaning my PC. So, I opened the ‘Control panel’ and further opened ‘Uninstall a program’. Then, I uninstalled those unused programs in two steps – right click + uninstall.

I also cleared the cache, stacks of temporary Internet Files, browsing history, etc. from the browser. I, at the same time, ran the registry cleaner to clear registries of uninstalled programs, ran antivirus program to do a virus scan. Thus, I sorted, organized and spring cleaned my PC. I also pushed downloaded media files to the secondary hard disk drive to free up huge memory space that accelerated my PC and made it less cluttered.
