  • Facebook and Twitter both have 60% female and 40% male users.
  • LinkedIn has 54% women users

Working women are topping the charts just about everywhere and the smartest way to fast track their advancing careers is through social media.  Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook are seeing women moving ahead of men to climb the corporate ladder and even in job hunting. After all, it is not just Pinterest that we take fancy to.

Women’s Use of LinkedIn

Until 2011, LinkedIn was predominantly men controlled social media platform. Now LinkedIn has much more women profiles as compared to men. You can perhaps find the online resume of any female employee that you look up. Women are also much more active on LinkedIn groups to share ideas, even if it is with other alumni from our college or former employees.

Social Media’s Importance for Your Career

Using social media to speed up your career or using it to find the dream job is not just smart. It is absolutely essential. Around 92% of U.S companies are using social networks and media portals to find the talent they require. To simply put it, there is no easier way to showcase your skill set to a larger audience and future prospective employers than social media.

Almost all professional job searches now days at least start on social media platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter. After all, social media makes it easy for people to learn about you and that is required when searching for a job.

Women Using Social Media for Work

If you are still not leveraging from the social media platforms to promote yourself, here is what you need to do:

  1. Create a free LinkedIn account: When recruiters want to fill their vacancies fast, LinkedIn is the website they visit. It is one of the best ways for you to build a far and spread out professional network. You also need to stay active on LinkedIn. Join alumni and industry groups. Look for people you know and connect with them. Try connecting to new people every day to continuously broaden your network.
  2.  Open a Twitter account: get yourself a Twitter handle and start following people or companies who interest you and the ones you might want to interview with for a job some day. It is easy to understand quite a bit about a company and industry trend just by following tweets.
  3. Connect your accounts: it is best to connect your LinkedIn updates with your Twitter account stream. This helps you keep current with social media faster. Remember to add your LinkedIn and Twitter handles on your email signatures, so that anyone getting an email from you will automatically come to know about your social media accounts.
  4. Be active: Share, ask and engage with other users. Identify an online community who discuss your field via social media and share information regularly. Creating such a community, even on Pinterest is not a bad idea.
  5. The Professional edge: remember, your purpose on social media here is to strengthen your career whether you are looking for a new job or not. You need to keep your social media channels professional looking, however adding little tit bits from the professional life is also not a bad idea. They may turn up as interesting pieces of conversation during a job interview.
