An online dating scam might consist of any number of different possibilities. iYogi exposes and brings to light such malicious scams. Some dating scams start with women who use positions of trust and manipulation to get men to send them money. The most common excuse here is for travel expenses, and this perpetuates the well known “travel scams”. Other scammers use excuses like emergency medical care to get their victims to send money. These aren’t the only scams, though. Some will use the internet to get people to call their 1-900 numbers in what are known as “phone scams”. Online Dating Scam
There was once a time when I was young and thought I knew it all. The internet had just come about and online dating was all the rage. I had never really used online dating before, but I thought I’d give it a try. After all, what could be the harm? That’s when I “met” a young lady. She seemed nice and she wanted to talk via email. Not really knowing what I was doing, I agreed to this. It wasn’t until much later that I realized that this “”lady”” was actually a guy trying to scam me through an online dating scam site.
Our email interaction went on for a few months. She confided in me and asked pointed questions. I felt like she wanted to know a little bit too much, but who was I to complain? I never gave her any sensitive information about myself, and this seemed to both her. After a while, things started to get a little bit different and a little bit creepy.
It was then that she asked for money. She told me a sad sob story about how her young son needed an emergency dentist appointment, but she couldn’t afford to have it done. Though this tugged at my heart strings, I didn’t send her the money. When “”she”” finally tried to call me, it was apparent what was going on. I had the police track the number and they found that my lady was a guy running an online dating scam.
Your story is kind of funny Oscar, reminds me of my lil encounter.. This is a very common practice with online scammers guy being girl..Even I had a run in with such a fellow couple of months back. I knew it was a guy but still played along so that I would have some laughs. He was trying desperately to get my details and the “she” was even asking money!! I have given his id and whatever details to the cops, lets just hope he gets nabbed..
Hey Greg, sorry to burst your little bubble but I don’t think the cops would be able to nab this scammer with an ID. I would bet my life that these people use fake IDs and even hide their IP’s when they are online and sending mails. This would prevent anyone from tracking their IDs and even if they do, it’s fake in the first place. They take every possible precaution before getting involved with someone.
