The Sony PlayStation Vita is made to launch as a PlayStation Portable replacement. Wait, is Sony abandoning its PlayStation Portable? Not quietly, not at least signature design. Rather, it has made it more powerful by adding more power to processor, 3G connectivity, bright and big 5 inch OLED screen (like those large latest Smartphone ranges). So, what is this gaming device made to replace – Sony PlayStation Portable or Smartphone?
Overview
Vita’s OLED touchscreen is highly responsive to taps and touches and easy to use with the gaming capability of Sony PlayStation 3. The device is no lesser than a Smartphone minus the voice call and messaging capabilities. The Vita includes a rear-facing and front-facing camera for clicking photos and playing augmented reality based games. The console is also is powered with apps and media playing capabilities to bring in Smartphone usage such as communicating through Facebook, Twitter, Skype, accessing movies from Netflix and PlayStation Store, listening to music and watching photos, using apps and chat with PlayStation Network friends. So, here comes the question. Are these capabilities added to the device to shatter our thinking – why do we need a standalone handheld gaming console when we do not compromise the fun of gaming devices?
Hardware
The Sony PlayStation Vita (or Sony PS Vita) has packed as much as it could to this single device to fight with Smartphone ranges and Nintendo DS. The large share of the body is occupied by its 5” OLED display with D-Pad control on the left hand, an analog stick on either side and face buttons on the right side. Especially the metallic rim engulfing the glossy back body is a reminiscent of iPhone 4S metallic border. Next to the R button, I found its volume rockers placed making easily reachable for my right hand and also headphone socket, USB port and a microphone.
