The moment that Droid users have been anticipating has finally come. Yes, Kevin Systrom has finally landed his photo sharing phenomenon, Instagram, on Android. He has hinted about the launch of the Instagram on Android and promised that it would launch “very soon” on Android at SXSW. The app is sweeping more than 30 million registered users since it stepped in iTunes App Store. However, Systrom claims that once available on Google Play, Instagram is potent to sweep twice the population of what it has on iOS platform as he hinted it was supposed to be “better than our iPhone app”.
So, how similar and dissimilar is Instagram on Android from the iPhone version?
Similarities
The Instagram on Android will support those Droid photo enthusiasts whose Smartphone supports Android 2.2 and who is willing to switch to Froyo from previous editions. The Instagram on Android creates a similar photo sharing experience as on its iOS sibling, with slight differences. According to the developer, “you’ll find all the same exact filters and community as our iOS version.”. The user interface mirrors the same layout as of Instagram iPhone version even including five tabs on the home screen. Also, the social integration of the Instagram on Android has not changed and it includes four major social networking sites that are Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and foursquare.
Dissimilarities
Though Instagram on Android supports all editions of Android from 2.2 onwards, but the app looks more optimized to the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). The Instagram on Android has brought a new camera icon from the ‘Camera’ view. The Android version of Instagram app also misses one notable feature. The iPhone counterpart can automatically resize a photo when it opens on the app; without having users to crop it short. The iPhone version requires you to resize a photo only when you select an image clip from photo library. Unfortunately, on Android you have to.
